The author and horticulturist Günther Dankmeyer was born in 1932 at the flower and seedsman city of Erfurt in Thuringia. After fleeing from East Germany in 1950, he later transferred from the renowned Herrenhäuser Gärten in Hanover to the wellknown German orchid nursery Wichmann-Orchideen in Celle, where he spent the next 29 years of his working life.

His mentor and teacher in orchids was the legendary grower and breeder Artur Elle. The author was a founder of the DOG-Jury and spent many years in ist service. His professional nursery career was completed with the Royal Orchid Company in Bonn, Germany.

Since retirement he has remained an active member of the German Orchid Growers Association besides maintaining regular contact with fellow Paphiopedilum specialists in the field.
